Writeup from MB 102:

Northwest Africa 7946 (NWA 7946)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2013 May

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Mohamed Aid in Ouarzazate, Morocc,o in May 2013.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Composed of small (0.2-0.9 mm), well-formed chondrules plus sparse mineral fragments and fine grained, CAI occur in a fine-grained, deep-brown matrix.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa0.2-85.8; Cr2O3 in ferroan examples is 0.16-0.31 wt.%, mean 0.23 wt.%, s.d. 0.07 wt.%, N = 8), orthopyroxene (Fs1.2-2.0Wo1.2-1.4), subcalcic augite (Fs1.3-2.0Wo38.4-36.3).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3.3). Estimation of subtype based on histograms of Cr2O3 content in ferroan olivine given by Grossman and Brearley (2005).

Specimens: 20.3 g and one polished thin section are at UWB. The remainder is held by M. Aid.
