Northwest Africa 12832 (NWA 12832)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased in 2018 by Mbark Arjdal from a dealer in Zouerat, Mauritania.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Small well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 170 ± 100 µm, N = 20), mineral fragments and fine grained CAI are set in a much finer grained matrix (red-brown in thin section, ~40 vol.%).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.0±24.6 (range Fa0.7-52.3), N = 4; Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.13-0.33 wt.%, mean 0.23 wt.%, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs6.0±5.5Wo1.1±0.4 (range Fs5.1-11.8Wo0.8-1.6), N = 3), augite (Fs7.3±2.7Wo36.4±0.3 (range Fs5.4-9.2Wo36.2-36.6), N = 2), diopside (Fs1.1Wo38.3), anorthite (An99.0Or0.0).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 23.8 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
