Northwest Africa 14066 (NWA 14066)

Purchased: 2020 Dec

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Tom Thiegs in December 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Relatively small, well-formed glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 250±160 µm, N = 22), zoned olivine fragments and very fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~20. vol.%, orange-brown in thin section) containing, kamacite, taenite and troilite. One CAI is composed of aluminous diopside, gehlenite, perovskite and pleonaste.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa25.3±27.8, range Fa1.4-55.4, N = 6; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.05-0.58 wt.%, mean 0.23±0.24 wt.%, N = 4), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs22.3±18.4Wo2.0±1.7, range Fs1.2-47.1Wo0.7-4.4, N = 5), subcalcic augite (Fs17.4Wo29.8), diopside (Fs1.1Wo49.0).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. T. Thiegs.
