Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14927 (NWA 14927)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Oct

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in October 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (some glass-bearing), mineral fragments and very fine-grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~40 vol.%, deep red-brown in thin section) containing kamacite, troilite, chromite and magnetite. Most chondrules are relatively small, but some much larger ones (up to 2 mm) are present (overall apparent diameter range 350 ± 400 µm, N = 25).

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa19.1±17.7, range Fa0.4-39.3, N = 8; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.23-0.58 wt.%, mean 0.36 wt.%, sd 0.12 wt.%, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs3.8±2.2Wo1.9±1.7, range Fs1.3-6.4Wo0.3-5.0, N = 9), Al-Ti-diopside (Fs0.6Wo58.5, Al2O3 21.6 wt.%, TiO2 1.1 wt.%).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 17.6 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
