Northwest Africa 14919 (NWA 14919)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Sep

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Juan Avilés Poblador in September 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, relatively small, unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 180±110 µm, N = 24), zoned mineral fragments and very fine-grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~ 40 vol.%, deep reddish-brown in thin section) containing magnetite, troilite, pentlandite and minor kamacite, plus secondary Fe oxide and barite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa21.2±19.8, range Fa0.8-49.8, N = 4; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.15-0.48 wt.%, mean 0.28±0.13 wt.%, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs3.1±3.4Wo2.1±1.4, range Fs1.0-8.2Wo0.6-3.7, N = 4), ferroan low-Ca pyroxene (Fs42.4±2.0Wo1.8±0.4, range Fs41.0-43.8Wo1.5-2.0, N = 2), subcalcic augite (Fs1.6Wo28.9), augite (Fs5.9Wo36.4), magnetite (Cr2O3 0.2 wt.%, 1.7 wt.%, N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3, magnetite-bearing).

Specimens: 15.85 g including two polished thin sections at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Poblador.
