Northwest Africa 14439 (NWA 14439) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Pallasite-PMG History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from a northwest -African meteorite dealer in 2021. Physical characteristics: Exterior surface shows numerous recessed dark orange olivine pits bounded by raised metal ridges with darker patina. Saw cut surface shows angular cm-sized brown to dark-orange olivine grains set in metal. The modal abundances are approximately 60% olivine 40% metal. Petrography: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Electron microprobe analysis reveals the presence olivine, kamacite, taenite, merrillite, silica and schreibersite, no sulfide observed. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa12.1±0.1, Fe/Mn=56±4, Fe/Mg=0.14±0.00, n=6; kamacite Ni=6.9±0.4, Co=0.49±0.04 (wt%), n=3; taenite Ni=29.8±5.0, Co=0.15±0.07 (wt%), n=2. Classification: Pallasite (main group) Specimens: 20 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
