Northwest Africa 13752 (NWA 13752)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Ureilite

History: Bought by Geologist Juan Aviles Poblador on behalf of the University of Alicante (Earth Sciences Department, Laboratory of Applied Petrology) during the Fall of 2019 from an anonymous supplier in Chinguetti, Mauritania.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with slightly weathered fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Specimen displays a coarse-grained cumulate texture (Average grain size ~mm, up to mm) composed primarily of olivine and pigeonite (most grains display reduced rims in contact with either graphite or Fe-Ni metal). Fe-oxide veinlets are present in some areas where kamacite and troilite grains have been weathered.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa9.9±6.6, range Fa0.8-17.2, Cr2O3=0.6±0.1 wt%, CaO=0.4±0.1 wt%, n=49), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs14.0±1.8Wo7.9±0.2, range Fs4.3-15.2Wo6.8-8.3, Cr2O3=0.9±0.1 wt%, Al2O3=0.5±0.1 wt%, n=35).

Classification: Ureilite

Specimens: 20.2 g at UCLA, main mass with Geologist Juan Aviles Poblador.
