Northwest Africa 14072 (NWA 14072)

Purchased: 2020 Nov

Classification: Ureilite

History: Purchased by Luc Labenne in November 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Protogranular assemblage composed predominantly of magnesian olivine and pigeonite (~30 vol.%) together with accessory Fe metal, daubreelite, alabandite, kamacite and graphite. Olivine grains exhibit reduced, more magnesian rims, which are associated with limited amounts of very fine grained Fe metal. Pigeonite occurs as larger grains containing augite exsolution lamellae and also with augite in fine grained granular aggregates.

Geochemistry: Olivine cores (7.9± 0.0, N = 3), olivine rims (1.7-3.9, N = 3), pigeonite hosts (Fs6.9±0.0Wo10.6-10.7, N = 2), subcalcic augite exsolution lamellae (Fs4.5±0.0Wo34.7±0.0, N = 2), granular pigeonite (Fs7.1Wo10.6), granular subcalcic augite (Fs4.6Wo34.6).

Classification: Ureilite (magnesian). The olivine and pigeonite compositions in this specimen are similar to those in highly magnesian ureilite Yamato 74659.

Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Labenne.
