Macroscopic Description: Robbie Marlow Dull black fusion crust totally encases LEW88366. Many dark and light colored weathered inclusions are visible in the dark matrix of this small specimen.
Thin Section Description: Brian Mason The section shows an aggregate of chondrules and chondrule fragments, up to 2.4 mm across, in a small amount of finely granular matrix consisting of olivine and pyroxene with 1-2% of troilite and nickel iron. The section is rimmed with will-preserved fusion crust. Weathering is slight, indicated by minor brown limonitic staining. Microprobe analyses show olivine, Fa1-19, mean Fa14 (CV FeO is 56); pyroxene, Fs2-21, The very small amount of nickel-iron suggests LL group, and the variability of olivine and pyroxene compositions type 3, hence the meteorite is classified as an LL3 chondrite (estimated LL3.4).
