Northwest Africa 13654 (NWA 13654)

Purchased: 2007 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased from a moroccan dealer at the mineral show in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France.

Physical characteristics: Single subrounded stone without fusion crust.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Ordinary chondrite of low petrologic type consisting of chondrules (up to ~2 mm), chondrule fragments, troilite, very low amounts of Fe-Ni metal, and low amounts of fine-grained interchondrule matrix. The mean apparent chondrule size is 553 µm (n=380).

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: (K. Metzler, S. Ebert, IfP) The mean olivine composition is Fa18.2±12.3 (3.2-43.6; n=22); the mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs11.0±8.4Wo1.4±1.2 (Fs1.5-30.7Wo0.2-3.9; n=24). The mean value of Cr2O3 (wt.%) in ferroan olivine and the 1-sigma standard deviation is 0.14±0.06 (n=44), similar to GRO 95544 (L3.2) and Krymka (LL3.2).

Classification: LL chondrite, based on mean chondrule size and very low metal content. Estimated petrologic subtype 3.2.
