Northwest Africa 12960 (NWA 12960)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Found in Ageria in the Ouargla area. Purchased in Morocco in 2019.

Physical characteristics: Crusted stones. Cut surface reveals a greenish fine-grained interior.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Igneous rock with doleritic texture. Mains minerals are pyroxene (typical size 500 µm, strongly zoned) and maskelynite, Fe oxides (to 150 µm), and sulfides (to 50 µm).

Geochemistry: Pyroxene Fs51.2±21.3Wo21.4±6.2, range Fs23.1-78.3, Fe/Mn=35.8±5.8 (n=12). Maskelynite An50.2±3.1Ab47.1±2.1Or2.7±1.3 (n=5). Magnetic susceptibiilty log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.50.

Classification: Martian meteorite (shergottite). Possibly paired with NWA 12550.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Isabelle Pothier.
