Northwest Africa 14047 (NWA 14047)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020 Dec

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Luc Labenne in December 2020 from a Moroccan dealer and subsequently acquired by Hermès, Paris.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Diabasic texture. Composed predominantly of zoned clinopyroxene and maskelynite together with accessory ulvöspinel, ilmenite, pyrrhotite, merrillite, fayalite and silica polymorph. Sporadic shock melt pockets consist of incompletely mixed, "swirly" vesicular glasses (exhibiting pale brown to dark brown colors in thin section). Veinlets of secondary calcite are present.

Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs48.9-57.8Wo12.5-15.9, FeO/MnO = 36-38, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs19.3-24.3Wo33.1-36.7, FeO/MnO = 28-32; Fs41.6Wo30.6, FeO/MnO = 36; N = 4), fayalite (Fa91.3-91.7, FeO/MnO = 60, N = 2), maskelynite (An46.9-54.0Or0.8-1.4, N = 4).

Classification: Shergottite (diabasic).

Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Hermès, Paris.
