Northwest Africa 14516 (NWA 14516)

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer at the mineral show in Munich, Germany.

Physical characteristics: Three light grayish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: Coarse-grained igneous rock with diabasic texture, predominantly composed of up to 1 mm sized finely exsolved pyroxene and interstitial maskelynite grains both showing strong irregular compositional zoning. Maskelynite contains myrmekitic intergrowths of silica and sodic plagioclase. Minor phases include partly exsolved ilmenite, troilite, merrillite, and baddeleyite. Cracks are commonly filled with secondary calcite. The meteorite is highly shocked and contains shock melt veins and pockets.

Geochemistry: pigeonite: Fs57.3±4.7Wo15.0±0.9 (Fs46.2-62.2Wo13.5-16.4, FeO/MnO=34-37, n=8); subcalcic augite: Fs27.7±7.0Wo31.9±1.6 (Fs21.4-45.2Wo27.4-34.0, FeO/MnO=26-34, n=17); maskelynite: An51.6±5.1Ab46.9±4.5Or1.5±0.7 (An46.2-58.2Ab40.8-53.1Or0.8-3.1, n=16)
