Saguia el Hamra, Western Sahara

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: In February 2019 a Moroccan meteorite hunter found two stones at a place called Dalaat Ladmeya in southeastern Morocco. A 2145 g stone was found at 26°42’34.38"N, 08°56’01.84"W and a similar-appearing 603 g stone at 26°42’34.49"N, 08°54’01.99" W. Both stones were sold in September 2021 to Luca Cableri of the Theatrum Mundi Gallery, Italy, and the larger stone was later sold to Wunderkammer in Zürich.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Diabasic texture. Composed predominantly of zoned prismatic clinopyroxene and lath-like maskelynite together with accessory silica polymorph, merrillite, Cr-ulvöspinel, ilmenite, pyrrhotite, baddeleyite, anorthoclase and alkali feldspathic glass, plus minor secondary calcite and Fe hydroxides. Some small, dark glassy melt pockets are present.

Geochemistry: Subcalcic augite (Fs22.1-23.1Wo38.4-35.3, FeO/MnO = 28, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs30.9Wo10.9, FeO/MnO =29), ferropigeonite rims (Fs50.0-60.8Wo12.3-17.5, FeO/MnO = 34-38, N = 3), maskelynite (An45.-0-49.9Or4.3-1.2, N = 3), anorthoclase (Ab43.8An41.0Or15.2).

Classification: Shergottite (diabasic). Paired with Swayyah 002 found in the same area.

Specimens: 22.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainders of both stones separately at Wunderkammer, Zürich and Theatrum Mundi, Arezzo, Italy.
