Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14461 (NWA 14461) Niger Purchased: 2021 Mar Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in March 2021 from a dealer in Niger. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Relatively large, well-formed, unequilibrated magnetite-bearing chondrules containing devitrified glass (apparent diameter 1070±420 µm, N = 26), plus fine grained AOA and fine- to medium-grained, irregularly-shaped CAI are set in an almost opaque matrix (~40 vol.%, black in thin section) containing Cr-rich magnetite, troilite (some in composite nodules with magnetite), plagioclase and rare kamacite. Minerals identified in CAI include gehlenite, spinel and perovskite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa18.3±25.7, range Fa0.4-71.7, N = 9), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs3.0±2.4Wo0.8±0.4, range Fs0.6-5.9Wo0.3-1.3, N = 6), subcalcic augite (Fs1.3Wo30.7), diopside (Fs1.4Wo38.8), magnetite (Cr2O3 = 4.6 ± 2.4 wt.%, range 1.4-7.5 wt.%, N = 5). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3). Specimens: 27.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
