Frontier Mountain 01147

Antarctica

Found 2001 December 21

Achondrite (ureilite)

A weathered, stony fragment of 0.5 g was recovered. Mineralogy and classification (A. Burroni and L. Folco, MNA-SI): Olivine and pigeonite ureilite with typical texture (average grain size 1 mm). Mafic silicates show homogeneous core compositions (olivine Fo80; pigeonite En75Wo8) and wide, strongly reduced rims. Graphite forms large intergranular flakes up to 1 mm in maximum elongation. Undulose extinction, planar fractures and kinking in both olivine and pigeonite indicate moderate shock deformation. Main mass, type specimen, thin section, MNA-SI.
