Macroscopic Description: Carol Schwarz

This small fragment is covered with very shiny black fusion crust. The interior is gray and homogeneous with a small amount of oxidation.


Thin Section (,2) Description: Brian Mason

The section shows a subophitic intergrowth of pale brown pigeonite grains (0.3-1.2 mm) and colorless plagioclase laths (up to 1.5 mm long). Pigeonite compositions cluster around Wo5Fs54, but a little augite, Wo43Fs28, is present, and some spots give intermediate compositions. An SiO2 polymorph, probably tridymite, is present as an accessory. The meteorite is an unbrecciated eucrite; mineral compositions and texture resemble those of LEW86001 and 86002, and the possibility of pairing should be considered.

Writeup from AMN 33(1):
LEW 87010 original classification in AMN 11, no. 2 as a eucrite. Later reclassified in AMN 17, no. 1, as a polymict eucrite, but listed in MetBase 7.1 as monomict (brecciated eucrite). Subsequent studies and several thin sections reveal no brecciation, and compositional studies of [1, 2] all show very low siderophile element concentrations. Therefore this sample is reclassified as an unbrecciated eucrite.
