Northwest Africa 2112 Northwest Africa Found 2003 Achondrite (eucrite) A 67 g partial stone with fresh fusion crust was purchased in Erfoud, Morocco, 2004 April. Description and classification (T. Bunch and J. Wittke, NAU): highly crushed monomict, granular to subophitic eucrite breccia; mm-sized (up to 2.4 mm) orthopyroxene and plagioclase both of which show prominent twinning; orthopyroxene also contains thin exsolution lamellae of Ca-rich pyroxene. Orthopyroxene, Fs46.5Wo2.8; augite, F26Wo34.2; plagioclase, An91, chromite, cr# = 81.2 and mg# = 23.4; metal, Ni = 0.56 wt. %, and minor ilmenite. Shock level is moderate with very thin melt veins that transgress the entire surface of a 5 cm long slice; limited maskelynite development. No apparent internal weathering. Specimens: type sample, 14.4 g NAU; main mass, Strufe. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
