Achondrite (eucrite)

Four stones with a total weight of 1239 grams were purchased in Erfoud, Morocco in 2004 May. Description and classification (T. Bunch and J, Wittke, NAU): polymict breccia that contains a variety of textures including subophitic, phyric, cumulate (fine to coarse-grained varieties), variolitic, and shock melt. Phyric basalt: orthopyroxene phenocrysts, Fs56.4Wo3.0, FeO/MnO = 34.5; groundmass augite, Fs35.6Wo34.2; plagioclase, An 81.6. Coarse-grained cumulate: orthopyroxene, Fs43.9Wo 1.9, FeO/MnO = 37.3; exsolved pigeonite, Fs46.3Wo 3.4; plagioclase, An94.9. Variolitic basalt:  Fs59.0Wo2.9, FeO/MnO = 35.3; subcalcic augite, Fs43.9Wo19.3; plagioclase, An76.5. Only very small amounts of ilmenite and no chromite were found in any rock type.  All clasts and matrix are strongly shocked, pyroxenes and plagioclase are mostly recrystallized); shock melt clasts are xenoliths, low weathering grade. Specimens: type specimen, 28 g, NAU; main mass, Birdsell.
