Writeup from MB 105:
Northwest Africa 2421 (NWA 2421) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: Feb 2014 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) Physical characteristics: One rough-surfaced, fusion crusted individual stone. Petrography: This highly shocked breccia consists dominantly of pyroxene, plagioclase (and maskelynite) and glassy shock-melt. Surviving crystal fragments are up to 2.5 mm (pyroxene) but most of the material has been granulated to <<1 mm. Accessory phases include ilmenite and silica. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene clusters near Fs55Wo3, but shows a 5 mol% spread in Mg/(Mg+Fe), along with commensurate-composition, e.g. Fs32Wo33, augite. Pyroxene FeO/MnO averages (26 analyses) 30.6. Plagioclase (26 analyses) is An79-93, average An88.5±2.5. Classification: Eucrite, breccia. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
