Northwest Africa 6971 (NWA 6971) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2011 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict) History: The meteorite was purchased in 2011 from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Greyish individual partly covered with fusion crust. Petrography: Coarse-grained basaltic breccia composed of up to 1.5 mm sized exsolved pyroxenes and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include FeS, chromite, and silica. No metallic iron was found. Plagioclase is partly converted into maskelynite and the meteorite contains impact melt veins. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs50.8±1.2Wo4.0±1.6 (Fs48.9-53.2Wo1.2-6.0, n=14, FeO/MnO=25-28); Ca-pyroxene: Fs25.9±1.6Wo38.8±1.6 (Fs22.4-29.0Wo36.3-42.9, n=19, FeO/MnO=22-30); calcic plagioclase: An93.1±0.7 (An91.9-94.0, n=15) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
