Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 6972 (NWA 6972) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2011 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: The meteorite was purchased in 2011 from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Greyish individual partly covered with fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is a fragmental breccia composed of rare basaltic clasts and abundant impact melt clasts set into a fine-grained clastic matrix. Basaltic clasts and matrix are dominantly composed of exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase grains of variable grain sizes ranging from 20 to 400 µm. Several matrix pyroxenes display magmatic zoning. Minor phases include chromite, ilmenite, fayalite, silica, and metallic iron. The meteorite is highly shocked with plagioclase being completely converted into maskelynite. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs38.2±11.8Wo3.1±1.5 (Fs21.8-59.4Wo1.6-5.3, n=32, FeO/MnO=23-31); Ca-pyroxene: Fs17.0±3.0Wo44.6±1.5 (Fs15.5-27.0Wo39.8-45.7, n=12, FeO/MnO=19-27); calcic plagioclase: An91.6±2.0 (An86.8-94.4, n=25) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
