Northwest Africa 8690 (NWA 8690) Morocco Purchased: 2014 Apr 22 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, cumulate) History: The stone was bought by R. Lenssen from a Moroccan meteorite dealer in Agadir in 2014 Physical characteristics: A single stone, almost fully covered by fresh fusion crust, showing regmaglypts. Cut surface reveals a light gray interior with a few cm-sized, slightly lighter clasts Petrography: Igneous rock with cumulate texture. Typical grain size 500 μm to 1 mm. Main minerals are orthopyroxene with augite exsolution and plagioclase. Sulfide, chromite, and silica polymorphs are present. Rare metal. Geochemistry: Pyroxenes: orthopyroxene Fs37.3±0.3Wo1.9±0.1 (N=4), augite exsolution Fs13.8±0.2Wo45.5±0.4 (N=2), FeO/MnO=27.1±2.6 (N=6). Plagioclase An89.6Ab10.0Or0.3 (N=3). Chromite Cr/(Cr+Al)= 0.83. Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 2.95 (χ in 10-9 m3/kg). Classification: Eucrite-cm (brecciated) Specimens: 25 g at CEREGE. Main mass with R. Lenssen | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
