Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 15032 (NWA 15032)

Algeria

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) purchased 3 kg of the samples from a meteorite dealer in Ouargla, Algeria, in May 2022.

Physical characteristics: The exterior of the type sample is brown and has an irregular shaped, cracked surface texture. The cut face shows the interior is composed of lithic and mineral clasts crosscut by abundant oxidized patches and veins.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is composed of: ~60 vol% completely oxidized FeNi metal, associated veins of iron hydroxides, ~40 vol% recrystallized lithic clasts (w/ sutured grain boundaries) and brecciated anhedral, low-Ca pyroxene, plagioclase, and rare olivine. Within mineral and lithic clasts: some pyroxenes are zoned and exsolved; and olivine contains poorly-developed reaction coronas. Additional minerals are: merrillite, chromite, and irregular to lath shaped silica polymorphs.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa32.3±6.0, Fe/Mn=38.6±1.4, n=4); low Ca pyroxene (Fs31.8±3.3Wo3.4±0.8, Fe/Mn=23.9±1.9, n=22); pigeonite (Fs39.0-51.4Wo5.9-6.1, Fe/Mn=24.2-24.1, n=2); high Ca pyroxene (Fs20.6±4.3Wo40.4±0.7, n=4); plagioclase (An94.7±1.5Or0.1±0.1, n=11).

Classification: Mesosiderite. Based on the abundance of weathered metal, textures and compositions of silicates, this sample is a mesosiderite.

Specimens: Carlos Muñecas holds the 800 g main mass. A polished thin mount, an endcut and slice totaling 38.5 g are on deposit at App.
