Northwest Africa 15042 (NWA 15042) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2022 Classification: Mesosiderite History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco. Physical characteristics: Brownish fragment with minor fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is composed of silicate (about 70 vol%) and moderately altered metallic (about 30 vol%) portions. The silica fraction is dominated by up to 2 mm sized weakly compositionally zoned low-Ca pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Orthopyroxenes often contain blebby and lamellar augite exsolutions. Minor phases are silica, chromite, FeS, and merrillite. The metallic lithology consists of partly altered taenite and kamacite grains dispersed between the silicates. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs32.6±1.1Wo4.0±0.3 (Fs31.8-34.8Wo3.6-4.5, FeO/MnO=20-22, n=10); augite exsolutions: Fs16.6±0.8Wo40.6±0.8 (Fs15.5-18.1Wo39.4-41.6, FeO/MnO=17-18, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An91.6±0.8 (An89.7-92.5, n=10) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
