Northwest Africa 15111 (NWA 15111)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R5)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in April, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Five dark grayish fragments largely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a grayish to light brownish interior and is a chondritic breccia composed of up to 7 mm sized angular to subrounded type 5 clasts in abundant type 5 host material consisting of chondrules and interchondrule matrix. Chondrules have an average diameter of about 400 µm. Ferroan olivine is the dominant mineral phase in all lithologies. More minor phases include low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, pyrrhotite and pentlandite; no metal detected

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa37.7±0.2 (Fa37.5-38.1, NiO=0.30±0.03 wt%, n=10); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs30.3±0.3Wo1.4±0.1 (Fs29.8-30.7Wo1.2-1.5, n=6); Ca-pyroxene: Fs11.7±0.6Wo44.5±1.0 (Fs10.9-12.8Wo42.3-45.4, n=8)
