Northwest Africa 15138 (NWA 15138)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in April, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock with small patches of fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia consisting of up to 4 mm sized basaltic and dark impact melt clasts and up to 1.5 mm sized mineral fragments in fine-grained clastic matrix. Predominant mineral phases are exsolved pyroxene, zoned low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. No metallic iron was detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to exsolution lamellae: Fs46.5±0.2Wo2.5±0.2 (Fs46.2-46.9Wo2.3-3.0, FeO/MnO=28-30, n=10); Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae: Fs20.1±0.5Wo42.4±0.6 (Fs19.2-20.9Wo41.1-43.1, FeO/MnO=23-28, n=10); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs35.5±4.7Wo1.9±0.1 (Fs28.5-42.3Wo1.7-2.1, FeO/MnO=30-38, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.3±2.9 (An87.1-95.8, n=10).
