Northwest Africa 15149 (NWA 15149)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased by Mr. Salamu Ali from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in 2022 and donated to the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MNB).

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish fragment without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark grayish interior and is a breccia composed of up to 2 mm sized basaltic, black melt, and abundant mineral clasts in a more fine-grained clastic and partly shock molten matrix. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, apatite, and ilmenite. No metallic iron was found. Contains secondary calcite and barite.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs58.8±0.2Wo2.2±0.2 (Fs58.6-59.4Wo2.0-2.7, FeO/MnO=29-31, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs26.1±1.0Wo43.2±0.9 (Fs25.1-28.6Wo40.7-44.2, FeO/MnO=27-32, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.5±0.7 (An89.6-91.7, n=10)
