Northwest Africa 15015 (NWA 15015)

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Two brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a brownish interior and consists of silicate (about 70 vol%) and metallic (about 30 vol%) portions. Silicate-dominated regions predominantly consist of low-Ca-pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Pyroxene often poicilitically encloses small plagioclase grains and vice versa. Ca-pyroxene is present as blebby and lamellar exsolutions in low-Ca pyroxene. Minor phases are silica, chromite, FeS, and merrillite. Kamacite and taenite constitute the metallic portion and are present as up to 1 cm sized irregular shaped aggregates dispersed throughout the rock.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host crystals to augite exsolutions: Fs30.8±0.8Wo3.6±0.5 (Fs29.6-32.1Wo2.9-4.2, FeO/MnO=20-23, n=10); augite exsolutions: Fs14.2±0.4Wo43.9±1.6 (Fs13.5-15.0Wo40.8-45.5, FeO/MnO=16-22, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.9±1.1 (An88.5-92.9, n=10)
