Northwest Africa 5436 (NWA 5436)

Algeria

Purchased: 2008

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3)

Physical characteristics: Dark stone. Cut face reveals large chondrules and CAIs set in a dark matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Large chondrules (~900 µm) set in an abundant fine-grained iron-rich matrix. Opaque minerals are troilite, metal and magnetite. CAIs up to 1 mm.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa13.7±4.5, range Fa8.1-19.1 (n=3). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs11.8±8.0Wo0.8±0.7, range Fs3.7-23.3 (n=5). Sulfides are Ni-free.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3). Reduced group based on absence of Ni in sulfides.

Specimens: Type speciment at CEREGE. Main mass with Norbert Kammel
