Northwest Africa 13578 (NWA 13578) Algeria Purchased: 2020 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6) History: Purchased from Algeria by Abdelhadi Aithiba. Physical characteristics: Shiny black exterior with patches of sandblasted, polygonally cracked, fusion crust. Some chondrule outlines were visible on the surface. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe BSE images revealed a few, large, faint chondrules (~1000 μm) set in a recrystallized matrix. Numerous opaques were observed throughout the meteorite, the majority of which were Cr-rich magnetite with some grains up to 500 μm. Fe-sulfide, Fe-Ni sulfide, and Ti-rich chromite were also observed as ubiquitous minor phases. Most chondrules were decorated with opaques. One observed porphyritic diopside-olivine chondrule was thickly mantled by coarse magnetite. The chondrule diopside had many fine, disseminated opaque inclusions. Plagioclase grain size was up to 150 μm in diameter. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Chondrule olivine Fa34.4±0.7, Fe/Mn=120±11, n=11; chondrule diopside Fs9.2±0.7Wo47.3±0.6, Fe/Mn=92±32, n=12; plagioclase Ab54.0±11.3An42.8±12.7Or3.2±1.5, n=8. Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK6) Specimens: 22.9 g on deposit at UNM, Abdelhadi Aithiba holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
