Northwest Africa 14046 (NWA 14046)


Find: 2020 Jul

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Found at an unspecified site in the Adrar region of Algeria in July 2020 by a Saharawi team of hunters represented by David Lehman.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) A relatively fine grained breccia composed of small angular mineral clasts plus rare lithic clasts set in a very fine grained matrix (~50 vol.%, gray in thin section with orange staining of accessory kamacite grains). Mineral clasts include diogenitic orthopyroxene, eucritic low-Ca pyroxene, augite, subcalcic augite, exsolved pigeonite, anorthite and rare olivine. One polycrystalline diogenite clast and one intergranular-textured eucrite clast were observed in the studied thin section, and the overall proportions of diogenitic and eucritic material as clasts are estimated to be subequal. Secondary barite and celestite are present.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs28.1-29.9Wo2.0-3.5, FeO/MnO = 26-30, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs42.5-46.7Wo1.1-3.7, FeO/MnO = 26-29, N = 5), subcalcic augite (Fs24.0Wo31.3, FeO/MnO =26), augite (Fs25.5Wo44.1, FeO/MnO = 31), olivine (18.7±0.0, FeO/MnO = 35-38, N = 2), anorthite (An91.7-96.1Or0.3-0.1, N = 3).

Classification: Howardite.

Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. D. Lehman.
