Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14162 (NWA 14162)

Algeria

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite, found in Algeria, was purchased in June 2021 in Nouakchott (Mauritania) by Pascal Maugein, member of the Société Française d'Astronomie (SAF), in collaboration with I. Bouhayek.

Physical characteristics: The main mass (1100 g) is a fresh crusted stone. Broken surface reveals a brecciated light-gray interior, with one darker clast.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Breccia of mineral and gabbroic lithic clasts set in a clastic matrix. Main minerals are pyroxene (some with exsolution) and plagioclase. Accessory phases: chromite, ilmenite, metal, troilite, silica polymorph. Another lithology (dark in cut surface) contains more abundant lithic clasts and is richer in metal and troilite.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene Fs47.9±1.7Wo1.4±0.1, FeO/MnO 31.0±1.8 (n=4). Ca-pyroxene Fs36.0Wo21.6, Fs23.6Wo40.4 (n=2). Plagioclase An91.2±1.5Ab8.6±1.5Or0.2±0.1. Dark clast: pyroxene Fs47.4Wo4.8 (n=1), plagioclase An88.2Ab11.6Or0.3 (n=1).

Classification: Achondrite (eucrite, brecciated)
