Northwest Africa 14132 (NWA 14132)

Tindouf, Algeria

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3-4)

History: (C. Muñecas, Expometeoritos) One piece was found near Tindouf, Algeria. The meteorite was eventually purchased by Carlos Muñecas from a dealer in Tindouf.

Physical characteristics: Approximately 70% of the sample surface has a discontinuous coating black, flow-lined fusion crust. The cut face of the sample is dark gray to dark brown has a brecciated chondritic texture composed of recrystallized clasts set within a host of well-defined chondrules some of which have rims of metal and sulfide.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample has a brecciated chondritic texture with recrystallized chondritic clasts set within a host of unequilibrated chondrules and fragments. Chondrules have an average apparent diameter of 546 μm (n=35). Sample contains ~3.5 vol% of FeNi Metal. Clinoenstatite is the dominant form of low-Ca pyroxene. Sample contains a single 1.2 cm porphyritic olivine-pyroxene macro-chondrule. Additional minerals: chromite, apatite and troilite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Host: Olivine Fa17.5±9.5 (Fa1.2-27.1, Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine=0.9±0.2, Fe/Mn=48.1±12.9, n=16); low-Ca pyroxene Fs8.8±6.6Wo0.6±0.4 (Fs1.3-19.0Wo0.2-1.1, Fe/Mn=32.5±25.2, n=10). Clasts: Olivine Fa24.4±0.5, Fe/Mn=43.7±2.2, n=6; low-Ca pyroxene Fs13.4±3.1Wo0.5±0.2, Fe/Mn=21.5±4.5, n=5.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3-4 C-S2 W1). Based on textures, chondrule size, magnetic susceptibility, unequilibrated and poorly equilibrated mineral compositions, sample is an L3-4.

Specimens: Carlos Muñecas (Expometeoritos) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and a 50.31 g sliced individual are on deposit at App.
