Northwest Africa 14378 (NWA 14378)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Puchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed small, glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 210 ± 120 µm, N = 24), olivine crystal fragments and very fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~20 vol.%, red-brown in thin section) containing altered metal, chromite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa19.3±17.2, range Fa0.6-48.9, N = 11; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.04-0.52 wt.%, mean 0.32 wt.%, sd 0.09 wt.%, N = 15), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs1.2±0.1Wo0.9±0.1, range Fs1.1-1.3Wo0.8-1.0, N = 3), augite (Fs1.2±0.1Wo41.9±2.2, range Fs1.2-1.3Wo39.5-43.7, N = 3).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 24.5 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
