Northwest Africa 13980 (NWA 13980)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: Purchased by Grant Harkness in 2021 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Breccia composed of Type 3 clasts within a fine grained matrix (very similar to the matrix in the clasts). The clasts consist of separated, well-formed, unequilibrated Cr-magnetite-bearing chondrules (some with concentric rims, apparent diameter 1290 ± 640 µm, N = 25) plus some irregularly-shaped, fine-grained CAI set in a fine grained matrix containing stained Cr-magnetite, intermediate plagioclase, chromite and chlorapatite. Orthopyroxene is apparently absent but augite is quite abundant, and both devitrified glass and feldspar are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa16.7±14.2, range Fa1.1-32.8, N = 6), augite (Fs12.4±13.3Wo49.6±1.1, range Fs1.3-38.3Wo48.4-51.1, N = 6), Al-Ti-diopside in CAI (Fs0.7Wo54.2, Al2O3 8.7 wt.%, TiO2 1.1 wt.%), plagioclase (An21.7Or3.3; An29.9Or2.4; N = 2), magnetite (Cr2O3 2.5-4.2 wt.%, N = 6).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3).

Specimens: 26 g including one polished thin section is at PSF; remainder in the Harkness Collection.
