Northwest Africa 14294 (NWA 14294)

Niger

Purchased: 2019 Sep

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Jesper Grønne in September 2019 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Small well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 200 ± 110 µm, N = 23), zoned mineral grains and fine grained CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~40 vol.%, opaque in thin section) containing kamacite, taenite and troilite. Phases identified in CAI include gehlenite, aluminous diopside, spinel, perovskite, hercynite and minor gypsum.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa30.5±37.2, range Fa1.0-79.2, N = 5; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.13-0.73 wt.%, mean 0.33 wt.%, sd 0.28 wt.%, N = 4), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs3.4±2.6Wo3.1±1.9, range Fs0.5-5.9Wo0.8-5.1, N = 5), subcalcic augite (Fs1.1Wo36.8), Al-Ti-augite (Fs25.9Wo39.2, Al2O3 4.1 wt.%, TiO2 1.1 wt.%), plagioclase (An53.3Or0.1; An91.4Or0.0; N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Grønne.
