Northwest Africa 14875 (NWA 14875)

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in June 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Small, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 230±160 µm, N = 26), zoned mineral fragments and sparse, very fine grained gehlenite-anorthite-bearing CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~30 vol.%, red-brown in thin section) containing abundant magnetite accompanied by troilite, altered kamacite and taenite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa25.3±24.1, range Fa0.4-79.3, N = 11; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.18-0.63 wt.%, mean 0.39±0.15 wt.%, N = 8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs3.0±2.4Wo3.3±2.7, range Fs0.8-6.4Wo1.0-8.9, N = 7), augite (Fs1.2Wo36.5; Fs2.3Wo47.1; N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 23.3 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
