Northwest Africa 15053 (NWA 15053)

Purchased: 2021 Dec

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang and Juan Chen in December 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated, magnetite- and glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 1080±610 µm, N = 26) together with relatively abundant CAI are set in a fine grained matrix (~30 vol.%, sepia brown to opaque in thin section) containing Cr-bearing magnetite, troilite, chromite and kamacite, plus secondary calcite and Fe oxides. Minerals in CAI include gehlenite, spinel, diopside and perovskite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa21.9±18.6, range Fa2.5-49.2, N = 7), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs12.5±18.2Wo1.4±0.5, range Fs0.6-36.9Wo0.9-2.2, N = 6), subcalcic diopside (Fs0.8Wo34.4), diopside (Fs0.9±0.1Wo40.9±3.4, range Fs0.8-1.0Wo37.9-44.6, N = 3), magnetite (Cr2O3 2.2-3.5 wt.%, N = 5).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3).

Specimens: 21.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang and Mr. J. Chen.
