Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 5036 (NWA 5036)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a melt breccia composed of up to 1.5 cm sized basaltic clasts and up to 300 µm sized mineral fragments set into abundant melt rock matrix. Many mineral grains show resorbtion textures where in contact with the melt rock. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxenes and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron has been detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs59.2±0.2Wo2.3±0.4 (Fs58.8-59.5Wo1.8-2.7, FeO/MnO=28-34, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs26.1±0.2Wo44.0±0.3 (Fs25.9-26.4Wo43.6-44.4, FeO/MnO=26-31, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.5±0.9 (An88.7-91.5, n=10)
