Northwest Africa 5374 (NWA 5374) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2008 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Midelt, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Grayish rock almost completely covered with fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of up to 700 µm sized basaltic and small black impact melt clasts in a clastic matrix containing a great diversity of minerals fragments. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene, compositionally zoned pigeonite, diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene (<10 vol%; up to 600 µm sized), and calcic plagioclase. Accessories include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron detected. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to exsolution lamellae: Fs61.2±0.5Wo2.2±0.6 (Fs60.7-61.9Wo1.5-2.8, FeO/MnO=30-32, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs27.2±0.8Wo41.7±0.8 (Fs26.4-29.1Wo40.0-42.4, FeO/MnO=29-32, n=7); diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs29.0±0.2Wo4.1±0.6 (Fs28.4-29.1Wo3.8-5.5, FeO/MnO=26-30, n=7); zoned pigeonite: Fs44.9±12.0Wo6.2±0.7 (Fs32.5-61.1Wo5.5-7.7, FeO/MnO=27-35, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An92.2±1.9 (An88.2-94.0, n=7) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
