Northwest Africa 5913 (NWA 5913)

Purchased: 2009

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a dark grayish interior and is a polymict breccia composed of lithic and mineral clasts up to 6 mm in size set into fine-grained clastic matrix. Lithic clasts are dark impact melt fragments and basaltic clasts mostly showing intersertal texture with domains of recrystallized mesostasis. Main minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases are silica, chromite, ilmenite, FeS, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs54.3±0.7Wo2.5±0.5 (Fs52.8-55.2Wo1.9-3.8, FeO/MnO=30-33, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs26.2±0.9Wo41.6±1.2 (Fs24.4-27.5Wo40.3-44.1, FeO/MnO=27-31, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An88.9±2.3 (An84.0-92.6, n=10)
