Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 6970 (NWA 6970)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2011

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock almost completely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of a variety of mineral and lithic fragments set into a fine-grained clastic groundmass. Lithic fragments are up to 4 mm sized basaltic and impact melt clasts. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene, homogeneous pigeonite, zoned pigeonite, zoned orthopyroxene, and calcic plagioclase all with highly variable grain sizes up to 700 µm. Minor phases include silica, Ti-poor chromite, ilmenite, FeS, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to exsolution lamellae: Fs53.1±0.1Wo2.1±0.1 (Fs52.9-53.3Wo2.0-2.5, FeO/MnO=30-32, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs27.0±0.6Wo39.0±0.7 (Fs26.1-28.1Wo37.2-39.4, FeO/MnO=27-33, n=8); homogeneous pigeonite: Fs41.3±0.2Wo8.5±0.3 (Fs40.9-41.7Wo8.0-8.9, FeO/MnO=25-29, n=9); zoned pigeonite: Fs43.6±4.2Wo7.6±1.6 (Fs38.2-48.4Wo5.1-10.0, FeO/MnO=27-33, n=6); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs41.6±11.8Wo2.6±0.2 (Fs25.1-54.7Wo2.4-2.9, FeO/MnO=29-37, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An86.9±2.2 (An83.6-89.8, n=7)
