Northwest Africa 12946 (NWA 12946)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019 Feb

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Purchased by Darryl Pitt in February 2019 from a Mauritanian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia consisting of eucrite clasts with intersertal texture plus related crystalline debris in a sparse matrix. Minerals are exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase together with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, Ti-chromite, troilite and rare Ca phosphate.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs61.2-62.2Wo2.4-2.2, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 4), high-Ca pyroxene (Fs26.8-28.1Wo44.1-42.5, FeO/MnO = 31-34, N = 4), plagioclase (An89.3-89.7Or0.4, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia).

Specimens: 20.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with DPitt.
