Northwest Africa 12986 (NWA 12986)

Morocco

Find: 2016

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Purchased in 2017 by Matthew Stream from a seller in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: (Daniel Sheikh, FSU) Sample is a fine-grained monomict breccia composed of subophitic eucrite clasts containing orthopyroxene, pigeonite, augite, calcic plagioclase, SiO2-rich glass, and troilite. Minor secondary calcite veins present.

Geochemistry: (Daniel Sheikh, FSU) Orthopyroxene (Fs64.0±1.4Wo4.2±0.7, range Fs62.0-65.9Wo3.2-5.3, Fe/Mn=27±2, n=10), pigeonite (Fs54.9±4.1Wo14.4±5.1, range Fs47.2-61.0Wo6.2-24.3, Fe/Mn=29±3, n=35), augite (Fs42.0±4.1Wo30.4±5.0, range Fs33.5-48.1Wo25.7-41.2, Fe/Mn=29±3, n=17), calcic plagioclase (An84.1±2.1, range An80.1-89.1, n=44).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia).

Specimens: 22 grams at UCLA; main mass with Matthew Stream.
