Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13771 (NWA 13771)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in late 2020.

Physical characteristics: Two dark grayish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: Eucrite-melt breccia composed of up to 1.7 mm sized mineral fragments set into abundant shock melted matrix. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxenes and calcic plagioclase. The fine-grained shock melt is mostly recrystallized and mineral grains in contact with the melt are partly resorbed. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron has been detected. Contains secondary calcite and barite.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs34.0±1.3Wo2.2±0.1 (Fs32.5-35.5Wo2.0-2.3, n=12, FeO/MnO=25-29); Ca-pyroxene: Fs13.0±0.4Wo44.4±0.7 (Fs12.5-13.8Wo43.1-45.2, n=10, FeO/MnO=18-25); calcic plagioclase: An93.9±0.5 (An93.1-94.6, n=12)

Classification: Eucrite-melt breccia
