Writeup from MB 111:

Erg Chech 005 (EC 005)        26°08’35’’N, 02°23’21’’W

Adrar, Algeria

Purchased: 2021 Dec

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: Purportedly found in June 2021 within the Erg Chech DCA in Algeria.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Polymict achondritic melt breccia, consisting of lithic clasts (diogenitic pyroxenite, Fe,Ni-metal-bearing melt rocks up to ~5 mm) and mineral fragments (eucritic and diogenitic pyroxenes, plagioclase), embedded in large amounts of crystallized melt. Accessories are chromium spinel, troilite, silica polymorph, and Ni-bearing metallic iron (mostly weathered).

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Eucritic pyroxene: Fs37.6±1.9Wo10.4±2.0 (Fs35.3-39.6Wo8.6-13.1); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 31.6; n=6. Diogenitic pyroxene: Fs26.2±2.8Wo1.5±0.2 (Fs22.2-31.1Wo1.3-1.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 28.2; n=9. Plagioclase An90.7±1.7Or0.2±0.3 (An86.3-92.6Or0.0-0.8); n=12.

Classification: Eucrite (melt breccia), based on texture and mineral chemistry.
