Northwest Africa 12967 (NWA 12967)


Purchased: 2019 May

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Found in Mauritania and purchased by Rachid Chaoui in May 2019 from a dealer in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Aggregate of predominantly orthopyroxene, anorthite and metal (~30 vol.%, kamacite with minor taenite) plus subordinate olivine (as fractured unzoned grains with a range of compositions), augite, silica polymorph (as acicular grains), chromite, troilite, pentlandite, ilmenite and merrillite. Orthopyroxene is compositionally-zoned (with symplectitic chromite in the ferroan rims) and some orthopyroxene contains irregular included blebs of augite.

Geochemistry: Zoned orthopyroxene (cores: Fs17.8-22.6Wo1.0-2.1, FeO/MnO = 30-33, N = 4; rims: Fs30.1-34.1Wo3.8-1.9, FeO/MnO = 22-24, N = 4), olivine (Fa17.6-26.7, FeO/MnO = 36-41, N = 5), ferroan orthopyroxene hosts (Fs36.0-38.4Wo2.3-3.0, FeO/MnO = 21-23, N = 2), clinopyroxene blebs in orthopyroxene (Fs16.3-16.8Wo42.9-41.9, FeO/MnO = 17-18, N = 2), anorthite (An90.2-90.3Or0.3, N = 2).

Classification: Mesosiderite.

Specimens: 49 g polished slice at UWB; remainder with Mr. R. Chaoui.
