DISCOVERY OF THE ALLAN HILLS A76004, ANTARCTICA, STONY METEORITE

Name: ALLAN HILLS A76004

Place of find: West of Allan Nunatak on the edge of the Polar plateau, Victoria Land, Antarctica.

76°46'30"S., 159°21'05"E.

Date of find: January 18, 1977.

Class and type: Stone. Olivine-hypersthene chondrite, amphoterite (LL3).

Number of individual

specimens: 1

Total weight: 305 g

Circumstances of find: Sighted from a helicopter which was taxiing 10-15 m above the bare ice, during the 1976-1977 season of the U.S.-Japan Joint Antarctic Expedition.

Meteorite Type: LL3 Chondrite

 

Physical Description:

This specimen appears to have been covered with a thin reddish-black fusion crust on all exterior surfaces. The fusion crust appears to have been spalled off the rounded corners. The matrix of this stone is very dark gray. The inclusions, both chondrules and clasts, are numerous. The clasts are up to 1 cm in apparent maximum length. Both fresh metal and oxidized metal, surrounding some chondrules and lithic clasts, are present. The meteorite does not appear extensively weathered. Approximate dimensions: 4.25 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm.
