Zufar, Oman

Find: 2018 Feb 09

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: 35 fragments were found in close proximity during a search for meteorites, one fragment (1802_0249; 80.8 g) was found 52 m south of the others.

Physical characteristics: A total of 36 fragments up to 5 cm in size, dark brown, no fusion crust.

Petrography: (Åke Rosén, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) Chondrules, and CAIs and olivine grains (up to 0.7 mm) in dark-brown matrix. Typical size of chondrules 0.2-0.5 mm (rarely to 1.2 mm). Abundant grains of FeS (polycrystalline, to 200 μm) and iron metal (to 1 mm) are present in matrix and chondrules, partial alteration of metal and sulfide. Unshocked (S1), medium weathering.

Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén) Olivine Fa35.5±6.4, range Fa12.8-39.5 (N = 27). Enstatite Fs4.6±3.5Wo1.6±1.2 (Fs2.3-12.0Wo1.0-5.0, N = 10). Plagioclase Ab38.9-40.9Or1.1-1.5 (N=2).

Classification: Based on chondrule size, texture and mineralogy this is a carbonaceous chondrite of type CO3. Unshocked. Medium weathering.

Specimens: 86.2 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO.
